GSV 84 – PHX 79: Golden State Valkyries Rally to Beat Phoenix Mercury in First-Ever Preseason Win

The Golden State Valkyries secured their first-ever preseason victory, defeating the Phoenix Mercury 84-79 at PHX Arena. This win marks a significant milestone for the WNBA’s newest expansion team as they prepare for their inaugural regular season.

Bench Power Propels Valkyries

The Valkyries’ bench played a pivotal role in the comeback. Guard Migna Touré led all scorers with 19 points off the bench, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Carla Leite added 11 points, while veteran Julie Vanloo contributed six points and six assists in 18 minutes. The bench outscored Phoenix’s reserves 51-31, highlighting the team’s depth.

Thornton Sets the Tone

Forward Kayla Thornton was instrumental in the first quarter, scoring nine points in 10 minutes. She showcased her versatility with a euro-step layup and a catch-and-shoot three-pointer. Thornton also recorded two steals in the final 30 seconds of the quarter, leading to four points that helped the Valkyries take a 15-14 lead.

Second-Half Surge

After trailing by 15 points early in the third quarter, the Valkyries ignited a 22-8 run, fueled by seven made three-pointers in the period. They tied the game by the end of the third quarter and maintained momentum into the fourth. Touré scored eight points in the final quarter, including a crucial three-pointer in the last minute. Vanloo sealed the victory with four free throws in the closing seconds.

Mercury’s Struggles

The Phoenix Mercury, undergoing a roster overhaul after the departures of Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner, faced challenges in this matchup. Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas each scored 15 points but did not play in the fourth quarter. The team committed 18 turnovers, leading to 32 points for the Valkyries, and shot 40.6% from the field.

Looking Ahead

The Valkyries’ victory showcases their potential as they enter their first WNBA season. With strong bench contributions and resilience, they aim to build on this momentum. The Mercury will look to address their turnovers and integrate their new roster effectively as the regular season approaches.
